The 5th commandment, “honor thy mother and thy father”, recognises the family unit as the fundamental unit of society.
However, the word “respect” does not necessarily require agreement. In the Judaic tradition we are required to question everything.
The deepest meaning of the 5th commandment is to respect and preserve our heritage. To observe, understand, and maintain the traditions that define us as a people of God.
