The 4th Religious Commandment

Observe Shabat שבת.  Keep it “Holy”.

The meaning of the 4th religious commandment; Remember the Sabbath day, Shabat שבת.  Keep it “Holy”.

The Hebrew word for “Holy” is kodesh קדוש.  It refers to setting aside the seventh day as a day to connect with Divinity.

In the Judaic tradition one must work for only 6 days and not on Shabat שבת, the 7th day.  Shabat שבת commences at sunset on Friday evening and continues through to sunset on the following day.

At the commencement of Shabat שבת, the lady of the house lights two candles, representing the left and the right columns of the Tree of Life.  From that moment, all work must cease until sunset on Saturday evening.

Kabbalah follows the Torah תורה model of God working for six days and resting on the seventh, declaring the 7th day as a “blessing” and a “gift of rest” for humankind.

In the Hebrew calendar and biblical tradition, Sunday is the first day of the week, making Saturday the seventh and final day, a day of rest.
