They reflect the essence of everything they describe.

At the level of Divinity, letters are also referred to as Autiot.

“The Autiot are said to have been created first, and out of them the different levels of manifestation were formed, consequently, the twenty-two divine signs, constituting the Autiot, are considered vast, fundamental, Godly powers, which are in essence, the basic substance of the Universe. It is said that when the letters were joined into words, that is expressions and utterances or commands, all manifestation was brought into existence, and the Will of the Creator was made fact, or “the word became flesh.” The Autiot thus contains a Sacred Science, in which the glyphs can be arranged and rearranged in an infinite number of ways and permutations. In fact, there are several systems describing how this is done. Each permutation of the same letters indicates another combination of the universal sacred powers described by the glyphs. There are in fact an endless amount of combinations, and so it is that the divine utterance which generated the heavens also created all contained within them”.
